Hobart City Deal

Antarctic and Southern Ocean gateway activities

On 18 December 2021, the Governor-General, Governor of Tasmania, Prime Minister, Premier of Tasmania, and Commonwealth Minister for the Environment officially launched the RSV Nuyina – Australia’s new icebreaker and polar research vessel for the next 30 years.

Following her launch, the Nuyina embarked on its maiden voyage to Antarctica on 23 December 2021. Across 39 days the icebreaker resupplied Casey station, commissioned and tested many of the ship’s scientific systems, and supported several ground-breaking research activities, returning safely to Hobart on 29 January 2022.

More information about the inaugural summer season of the RSV Nuyina can be found at www.antarctica.gov.au/nuyina.
