Hobart City Deal

Key Focus Areas

Below is a list of projects that are currently underway in the key focus areas for the Hobart City Deal. For further information please click the links below.

Hobart Airport: Building a direct international gateway

The Hobart Airport is working with the Australian and Tasmanian Governments to enable expansion of international flights into and out of the Tasmania. Hobart Airport will continue to play a critical role to support Hobart as a key gateway to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, and Tasmania’s international gateway for tourists and exports. This will support growth and diversity in tourism and freight markets, and is key to Hobart’s role as a key gateway to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean.

Gateway to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean

City Deal partners are working to progress the realisation of an Antarctic and Science Precinct, which is expected to support the activation of Macquarie Point and enhance Hobart’s position as an international gateway to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean.Partners will continue to support Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, operations and logistics activity across Greater Hobart, to drive economic activity and job creation in the region.

Greater Hobart Transport Vision

Through the City Deal, we are working together to deliver an integrated and collaborative approach to transport management and continue to invest in a reliable, sustainable and cost effective transport system with a focus on prioritising active and public transport as well as efficient private car travel.

Key projects under this key focus area include:

  1. improving southern, eastern and northern access into the city
  2. exploring the feasibility of a dedicated bus transit centre for passenger interchanges in the Hobart CBD
  3. adopting smart traffic management solutions
  4. encouraging the uptake of public and active transport

Affordable housing and urban renewal

City Deal Partners will collaborate to deliver a range of affordable housing options suitable for different household types, in locations close to where people work and where services are delivered. The aim is to ensure Hobart has a more diverse, affordable and inclusive housing mix to provide choices to meet our changing lifestyle and population needs.

Activating the Northern Suburbs Transit Corridor

City Deal Partners will support the activation of the Northern Suburbs Transit Corridor by driving transit-oriented development and urban renewal, and providing for public transport along the corridor.

This project is currently in the very early stages of planning to identify an appropriate transport mode and operational parameters.

Smart, liveable and investment ready city

Through the Hobart City Deal, partners are working together to leverage Hobart’s natural amenity and build on its position as vibrant, liveable and connected global city. A Smart Cities Working Group has been established to bring all City Deal Partners together to learn from the work being led by the Hobart City Council and to identify future opportunities for collaboration. The Working Group will also facilitate City Deal Partners’ exploration of investment and economic opportunities, investment in services to support entrepreneurs and delivery of a range of facility improvements, master planning, city beautification and accessibility work.

Strategic collaboration and governance

The Hobart City Deal provides a vision, key measures of success and key focus areas for the three levels of government to collectively guide and encourage further investment in the city by embracing opportunities for growth and addressing key strategic and infrastructure challenges.

There are two governance structures that will run in parallel with complementary roles:

  1. the Hobart City Deal governance monitors and reports on the implementation of the Deal
  2. the Greater Hobart Act governance leads the implementation of some actions identified in the Deal, as well as having a broader integrated planning and ongoing decision making role as Greater Hobart grows.
